The Israeli prime minister has called on his British counterpart to support additional sanctions against Iran following Tehran’s recent ballistic missile test. Benjamin Netanyahu made the appeal during a meeting with Theresa May in London on Monday. He stressed that Israel and the UK must ensure that Iran’s aggression would not go unanswered. The British premier, however, expressed support for Iran’s nuclear deal with the P5+1 group of countries, but said the two sides must be alert toward Tehran’s pattern of destabilizing activities in the region. Iranian officials say the missile program does not violate the historic nuclear accord and is in line with the country’s defense doctrine.

In an interview with Press TV, Mark Weber, the director of the Institute for Historical Review, said that Netanyahu is trying to take advantage of Donald Trump’s presidency in the United States, after years of tension with his predecessor, to once again put pressure on Iran and ultimately “topple” the Islamic Republic.

“The timing is very important. Netanyahu is trying to take advantage of the newness of the Trump administration which in recent weeks has dangerously escalated tensions by threatening Iran. Netanyahu is trying to add to the pressure on Iran from the United States. He knows that Theresa May is very friendly to Israel, very friendly to Zionist interests in the Middle East and he's trying to build on that,” Weber said

It is unclear how this is going to play out because Netanyahu and Trump’s views on Iran are completely out of line with a worldwide consensus on the need for deescalating tensions, according to the analyst.

Weber noted that  Netanyahu and the Zionist lobbies in Britain and the United States seize upon any pretext to bring maximum pressure against Iran, because the ultimate goal for them is “the removal of the Islamic Republic of Iran and any government in the region that Israel regards as harmful to its interests.”
