Fake leopard skin used in South Africa to save cats

A conservation group in South Africa has decided to reduce poaching of threatened leopards by making artificial furs for official clothing.

The group has handed the mock versions of furs to one of country’s main ethnic groups. They use them in ceremonial attire. The replica pelts have been distributed for free while vendors sell real leopard skins for around 370 dollars.

The artificial leopard skins generally look shinier and neater than their real counterparts, which need to be replaced after around a decade. Experts say an estimated 1,500 to 2,500 leopards are killed annually in Africa to meet traditional demand for skins.
