At least three Chinese tourists have been killed and six others remain missing after their boat sank off Malaysian coast, maritime officials say.
The boat, carrying 28 Chinese, a skipper and two crew members, disappeared and lost contact on Saturday hours after it left Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Malaysia’s eastern state of Sabah for the popular tourist island of Pulau Mengalum, located 60 kilometers west of the city.
Following a widespread search and rescue operation, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) said Monday that the vessel overturned after being hit by heavy waves.
“According to the skipper, the boat was ‘broken’ after being hit by strong waves, and sank. All the tourists were tied together and were carried away by the currents,” the MMEA’s director-general, Ahmad Puzi Ab Kahar, said late on Sunday.
Malaysian officials and the Chinese Consulate General in Kota Kinabalu confirmed that six people, including five Chinese, remain missing.
“We found 23 Chinese tourists, three among who were dead and 20 survived," Sabah Police Commissioner Ramli Din said.
The survivors and the victims reportedly arrived in Kota Kinabalu early Monday and were transferred to hospital.
A search operation is underway for the five missing Chinese and a local crew member.
