US President Donald Trump has invited Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu to Washington next month. The White House says Trump made the invitation in a phone call with Netanyahu during which they agreed to consult closely on Middle East issues, including Iran. Trump has also affirmed his “unprecedented commitment to Israel’s security.”
A US-based journalist and political commentator believes the fact that Netanyahu will be one of the first foreign leaders to visit Washington indicates that the Israeli lobby will be controlling US foreign policy.
“I think that means that the new administration is going to ratify anything that this most right-wing Israeli government wants to do including rapidly expanding settlements and engaging in other forms of repression against the Palestinians,” Richard Silverstein told Press TV in an interview on Monday.
He also predicted that the US embassy will be moved to Jerusalem al-Quds from Tel Aviv, asserting that it will create a very “high level” of tension and hostility in the Muslim world.
The commentator further argued Trump will be “hostile” to Iran and the country’s nuclear agreement [the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action] and that he will share Israel’s skepticism regarding the Islamic Republic.
“I think we are in four years of ratcheting up of great hostility on the part of Israel and the United States towards Iran and towards the kinds of issues that Iran feels are important,” he said.
However, he expressed hope that within two to four years, Trump will be “totally discredited” and there will be a return to a “more sane and pragmatic policy” in the Middle East.
