Hillary Clinton gets booed at Trump’s presidential inauguration
Former US secretary of state Hillary Clinton has been booed at the inauguration of Donald Trump as the president of the United States.
Despite his controversial policies and divisive rhetoric, Trump stunned the world by defeating the heavily-favored Democratic candidate on November 8, 2016.
When Clinton was introduced on Friday at the ceremony along with her husband, former US President Bill Clinton, she was met with jeers and boos from the pro-Trump crowd.
Many of Trump’s supporters were wearing red hats with Trump's campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again.”
Shortly after Clinton was greeted by boos from the crowd, former President George W. Bush, a Republican, and former first lady Laura Bush received thunderous applause from the audience.
Bush’s father, former President George H.W. Bush, however, did not show up at the inauguration ceremony of Trump, who had destroyed the candidacy of his son, Jeb Bush.
Clinton had expressed her disappointment of losing the election to Trump, admitting there were times when she wanted to "curl up…and never leave the house again.”
She had said that making the public appearance "wasn't the easiest” thing to do for her after suffering a crushing defeat at the hands of the billionaire businessman.
During the bitter White House race, Trump repeatedly denounced Clinton as “Crooked Hillary” and vowed to put her in prison if elected and often led his supporters in chants of "lock her up."
Those close to Clinton said attending Trump’s ceremony at the Capitol wasn't an easy decision for her, because she was really expected to be sworn in as the president.
“Let's face it, it's not an easy moment for her,” one longtime confidant said. “She expected to be there, she really did. She thought she would be the next president. And she fought so hard because she thought she was the better candidate for the country by a long shot.”
Meanwhile, Clinton said in a message on her Twitter account she attended the event “to honor our democracy & its enduring values.”
