A British sailor has broken the world record for the greatest distance sailed solo in 24 hours.

Alex Thomson has covered over 990 kilometers of sailing on his 18-meter racing yacht in the non-stop round-the-world race. Race organizers say his average speed was over 40 kilometers per hour.

The skipper has surpassed the previous mark of 988 kilometers in 24 hours, which was set by a French sailor in 2012. The ‘Vendee Globe’ race was created in 1968 as the first non-stop solo, round the world race.
