Trump on Russia relations

US President-elect Donald Trump shows no signs of withdrawing from his stance to improve ties with Russia. Trump has told the US daily The Wall Street Journal that he is open to lifting the sanctions against Russia under certain conditions. He said he is willing to keep the sanctions that the Obama administration recently imposed on Russia at least for a period of time. Trump however noted that he would consider lifting the punitive measures, depending on how helpful the Russians are in the fight against terrorism, as well as assisting with other goals that he feels are important to the US.

Israel, a security threat to the US

With less than a week until Inauguration Day in the US, concerns are growing over President-elect Donald Trump’s plan to move the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem al-Quds. The controversial billionaire has at various times supported the embassy relocation despite warnings by the Obama administration and some European and Arab official. Trump has even picked as his ambassador to Israel David Friedman, a right-wing lawyer who has pledged to relocate the US embassy. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has warned Trump against taking the step. In a letter to Trump, Abbas said moving the embassy would have a disastrous impact on the peace process, on the two-state solution, and on the stability and security of the region.

‘Deal with the Devil’

The United States has lifted some trade sanctions against the Sudanese government. The financial sanctions had been imposed on Sudan back in 1997. President Bill Clinton imposed a comprehensive trade embargo against Sudan and blocked the assets of the Sudanese government. The Sudanese government has been accused of sponsoring international terrorism. Khartoum is believed to have hosted former al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden back in the 1990s. The Sudanese government has also been under fire for the flagrant violation of human rights. Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir is wanted by the International Criminal Court on charges of committing genocide in Darfur.
