The European Union (EU)’s high representative for security and foreign policy, Federica Mogherini has said the bloc will remain committed to and work to ensure the proper execution of a nuclear deal between Iran and the P5+1 group of world powers. US President-elect Donald Trump had said he would scrap the deal once he takes office.
Jan Oberg, founder of transnational.org, believes it is in the interest of the European Union to follow through on the nuclear deal, adding that it is a “moral obligation” to live up to what has been signed.
“This [the nuclear deal] was one of the best events or historical decisions made by the Obama administration. It is an example that will go over in the history of diplomacy as a case with a very difficult situation solved by non-violent means where the alternative would probably have been war,” the analyst told Press TV in an interview on Monday.
He also noted the reason why Mogherini has emphasized that the European Union will stand for what it has signed is that there are concerns that the Trump administration is not going to implement the nuclear deal, especially when it comes to the lifting of the sanctions which is a “very worrying perspective”.
However, he said, if the United States puts heavy pressure on the European Union, the bloc may not be able to stand united over the nuclear issue due to its internal dynamics.
“Well you have a couple of possibilities, possible scenarios in the future. One is that the EU as an EU, all of them will stand by. Another one is that some will stand by and some will fall off if the Americans begin to twist arms, and the third one is that the EU will in itself more or less fall apart and therefore not have a common policy on this point,” he said in conclusion.
