India's Assam hosts traditional buffalo fight

Assam buffalo fight

Indian state of Assam has celebrated its harvest festival with a traditional buffalo fight. Although the Supreme Court has banned animal fights, the villagers say it is inseparable from their culture and tradition.

More than 10,000 people gathered to watch centuries-old tradition. Although the fights were not held ‘officially’, at least 20 bulls locked horns in full public view 'secretly' since the media was kept out of bounds.

Strong buffalos pitted against each for the state of cash prize for the buffalo owners. The prize money ranges between 30 and 70 dollars. There is also a trainee who trains the buffalo and acts as a referee while conducting the entire fight.
