US intervention in Chinese affairs dangerous: Analyst

Rodney Martin, former congressional staffer

US State Department nominee Rex Tillerson’s  remarks against China show the kind of “dangerous” interventionism by Washington that can prompt serious responses from China, says an American political analyst.

Rodney Martin, a former congressional staffer based in Los Angeles, made the remarks in an interview with Press TV on Friday, following Tillerson’s call for an end to China’s activities in the disputed South China Sea

The CEO of energy giant ExxonMobil made the comments during his confirmation hearing before the US Senate on Wednesday, describing as “extremely worrisome” China’s building of artificial islands in the sea.

China claims almost all of the strategic South China Sea, which acts as a gateway for trillions of dollars in annual maritime trade.

Washington has previously reacted to China’s island building by deploying warships in the vicinity of the islands and flying fighter jets over them, moves that have angered Beijing.

China says the US is “militarizing the region” and that the disputed areas have historically been its territory.

“The world has to remember the United States created an artificial waterway called the Panama Canal and then used that artificial waterway to establish a colonial presence in Panama and declared that US territory for over a hundred years,” Martin told Press TV.

“So, the United States itself has dirty hands as to creating artificial creations to establish a presence in faraway lands, whereas the Chinese have territorial claims in the South China Sea,” the analyst added.

Projecting a “tit for tat” situation, Martin argued that Beijing would easily put a strain on US economy if it wanted to retaliate Washington’s intervention.

“That would have a tremendous impact,” he continued. “What the United States is failing to recognize is that China is not as dependent on the United States as the United States thinks that it is.”

He noted that China has expanded its ties with many countries, forming an “economic sphere” across the world.
