US troops deployment to Poland very provocative: Analyst

Around 3,500 US troops have arrived in Poland, one of the largest deployments of US forces in Europe since the end of the Cold War in 1991, sparking anger from Russia.

Bill Jones, a member of the Executive Intelligence Review, believes the deployment is “very provocative” and part of a policy of containment that US President Barack Obama and NATO have been pursuing.

“This is not a sudden thing that has been done. It has been a steady move to push the borders of military troops of NATO right on the Russian border,” the analyst told Press TV in an interview on Friday.

He also described Russia’s reaction as “absolutely correct” and “understandable,” arguing that Moscow will adopt a “wait-and-see attitude” rather than reacting “abruptly” to moves that are being made by an outgoing president.

Jones added that the US policy towards Russia will change when President-elect Donald Trump takes office later this month given his positive attempts to try to create a decent relationship between the two countries. However, he said, there is still a possibility that President Obama starts a war within the next few days.

The analyst predicted that Trump will be able to come to agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin with regard to the easing of tensions between their countries.

“I think there is also an intention on Moscow's side to try and create such a working relationship with the United States which simply not existed during most of the Obama administration,” he said in conclusion.
