A treasured Bengal white tiger has become the winner of the most popular animal contest in a zoo in Peru’s capital.

Zookeepers say the contest intended to draw attention to the plight of these animals that are fighting extinction.

Civa Sumac is the first white Bengal tigress born in captivity in Lima. She is two and a half-year-old and weighs 128 kilograms. The award ceremony was held after hundreds of families voted for their favorite animal through the Zoo's official Facebook page.

Sumac’s caretaker receives The Golden Claw award on her behalf. A sea lion came in second place and a Lion won third place.
