Hamas: Facebook colluding with Israel

Hamas Spokesman Husam Badran

Hamas has blasted Facebook for colluding with the regime in Israel after the social networking giant closed more than 100 pages and accounts promoting the Gaza-based Palestinian resistance movement.

“This vicious campaign came after the launching of the 21st anniversary of the assassination of the first engineer of the Ezzeddin al-Qassam Brigades, Yahya Ayyash,” Husam Badran, a Hamas spokesman, said in a statement on Saturday, Palestinian Ma’an News Agency reported.

Ezzeddin al-Qassam Brigades forms Hamas’ military wing, which has been defending blockaded Gaza against Israeli acts of aggression, including three deadly wars, over the past years.

The Hamas official said Facebook had shut down more than 90 pages supporting the Palestinian group as well as 30 personal accounts affiliated with it.

The targeted content had been placed across the social network in commemoration of Ayyash, who was assassinated by Tel Aviv in 1996 with an explosive-laden cellular phone.

The Hamas spokesman further described the move as a “persistent collusion of the Facebook administration with Israeli occupation policies.”

This is while Facebook has withheld action against Israeli politicians and soldiers. Sami Abu Zuhri, another Hamas spokesman, said last July that the regime has, on numerous occasions, used the network to express “pride at the killing of Palestinians.”

According to Ma’an, Knesset, the Israeli parliament, is, meanwhile, advancing proposed legislation, empowering Tel Aviv to force Facebook to act against pro-Palestinian content.
