US Quds Embassy Recognition Act politically motivated, analyst says

Three US Republican senators have proposed a controversial bill to recognize Jerusalem al-Quds as the capital of Israel, in contravention of international norms. The Jerusalem Embassy and Recognition Act, proposed by senators Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, and Dean Heller also calls for the US embassy to be transferred to al-Quds. This is also a campaign pledge by the president-elect Donald Trump, which goes against the US long-standing policy on the city and international law.

In an interview with Press TV, Richard Silverstein, a journalist and political commentator, described the bill on the status of Jerusalem al-Quds as a personal favor to the Zionist tycoon, Sheldon Adelson, who can be the future financier of likely presidential nominees in the Republican camp.

“I think that we should look at the three senators. Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz both ran for president and both had high hopes for getting financial support from Sheldon Adelson, who is one of the most right-wing GOP donors in the United States … So, those two expect to run for president again and they are currying favor with Adelson because of that and the third senator Dean Heller represents Nevada, which is where Adelson lives,” the analyst noted.

He further continued by saying that following the election of Donald Trump as the next US president, no one should get surprised anymore in the future by seeing such sycophantic attempts, which, according to him, aim at ingratiating Tel Aviv. The analyst added that the introduction of the bill was an indication of where the US is going to go in the next four years regarding Israel.

Silverstein also reiterated that by picking David Friedman, a staunch supporter of Israel’s settlement activities, as his ambassador to Tel Aviv, Donald Trump is signaling his 100 percent support for anything far-right Israeli politicians and leaders are contemplating.

“I think that what Trump is basically telegraphing to the world is that they don’t view East-Jerusalem [al-Quds] or the West Bank or anything that we would call Palestine as being Palestinian. They view that all as Israeli and under Israeli control and they want to give Israel free rein to define its borders and its territories," he concluded.
