China holds camel festival to mark new year

Mongolian herdsmen race camels in Hulunbuir, North China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

There are many different ways and traditions around the globe to welcome the New Year.

Participants parade on camel sledges during the opening ceremony.

In China’s Inner Mongolia, herdsmen hold a spectacular camel festival to celebrate the occasion.

The event is an annual camel relay race and camel beauty contest. The relay race is 50 kilometers long.

Each team has 10 camels, and they should finish 10 courses. For the beauty contest, the camels are judged by their bodies, muscles and hooves.

Other activities such as camel shows, milking camels and twisting camel’s hair will be held during the competition.

A Mongolian woman wears traditional costume at the festival, which will feature camel racing and a camel beauty pageant.

Organizers say the event is aimed at promoting traditions and celebrating the winter season.
