The United States has announced a series of economic sanctions against Russia, as well as expulsion of 35 Russian diplomats, over allegations that it interfered in the 2016 US presidential election through cyber-attacks.

A political analyst believes President Barack Obama’s move will not only destroy Washington’s relationship with Moscow, but it will also affect other areas of US foreign policy.

“If we look at this relationship and how this progressed, we have to go back to Ukraine and the efforts that were made to topple the democratically elected government of Ukraine... And George Soros of course was a very prominent player in this and he seems to be a very prominent player in efforts to try to do the same thing to destabilize Russia and other countries with these 'color revolutions',” Steven Kelley told Press TV in an interview on Friday.

He also noted that this is a “scorched earth policy” to try to eliminate any possibility that the "criminals" in the Obama administration will ever stand trial for their crimes and treason.

The analyst added that the new US sanctions against Russia are an “act of desperation” and an “all-out drive” to start World War III in an attempt to prevent the prosecution of such people as Soros in the next administration when their treason becomes exposed.

“This is a convenient thing. This is not so much of a philosophical, political thing. This is mostly just the criminals that are involved with the Obama administration – George Soros again – trying to save their real lives at this point,” he said.
