US officer’s son, 2, fatally shoots himself

The two-year-old son of a Cleveland police officer has shot and killed himself with his father's gun.

A US police officer’s son, aged 2, is dead after shooting himself using his father’s gun in Cleveland, Ohio, authorities say.

The toddler apparently got hold of his father’s service weapon and accidentally shot himself on Friday morning, according to police officials.

“The victim is the son of a 54-year-old Cleveland Police Officer who was hired in 1993,” a Police spokesman said.

“Weapon confirmed to be his service weapon. This investigation remains in the early stages and no arrests have been made,” the spokesman added.

The boy was rushed to a hospital but was later pronounced dead.

Sonya Hobbs, a neighbor, said she saw the toddler's older brother running out of their home while shouting, “My brother shot himself, call 911.”

“He was just screaming and hollering. I got my phone and called 911,” she added.

Every year, similar incidents take lives of many children and adults in the United States.

In October, a 7-year-old boy found a gun at home and accidentally shot and killed a 3-year-old boy. The boy died from a gunshot wound to the torso.

In May, a 5-year-old girl shot herself dead in Detroit after finding a handgun under her grandmother's pillow.

In February, a 3-year-old boy accidentally shot his mother in the head in Michigan.

The boy discharged a gun, striking his 26-year-old mother in the back of the head.

In October 2015, an 11-year-old boy shot and killed a girl, 8, at a Tennessee trailer park in an argument over a puppy.

Using his father’s 12-gauge single-shot shotgun, the boy shot his next-door neighbor McKayla Dyer.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), firearms are the cause of death for more than 33,000 people in the United States every year, a number that includes accidental discharge, murder and suicides.
