Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has agreed with either exception or commutation of the sentences of more than 1,200 convicts deemed fit to receive the clemency.

The Leader issued the decree on Friday, upon revising a list submitted by Iran’s Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani.

The roster comprised the names of as many as 1,231 people, who had been convicted in local courts of arbitration, the country’s Islamic Revolution Court, the judicial apparatus serving Iran’s Armed Forces, and the government bodies meting out discretionary correction.

The clemency was granted on the eve of the anniversary of the birthday of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

The 17th day of the lunar calendar month of Rabi al-Awwal coincides with the birth anniversaries of the Prophet of Islam and Imam Jafar Sadiq (AS), the Sixth Shia Imam. This year, it falls on Saturday, December 17.
