Iran has contingency plans for JCPOA violations: Velayati

A senior Iranian official says Tehran has prepared contingency plans for responding to any manner of violation of its nuclear deal with the world powers.     

“Without a doubt the people will be happy after they hear of Iran’s decisive response while Iran’s enemies will lose hope,” said Ali Akbar Velayati, a senior adviser to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei on international affairs, on Monday.

He went on to stress that Iran will remain true to its commitment to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which was signed between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council – the United States, France, Britain, China and Russia – plus Germany in Vienna in July 2015.

“If there is even the slightest defect in the execution of US's commitments, Washington will face Tehran’s clear and decisive response,” said Velayati.     

He also went on to condemn the US Senate’s recent approval of a bill which extends Washington’s anti-Iran sanctions, stressing that such a move will not remain unanswered.

The US Senate on December 1 voted to extend Iran Sanctions Act (ISA) for another 10 years. The sanctions law, which would authorize the US president to re-impose sanctions on Iran, was first adopted in 1996 to punish investments in the Islamic Republic over its nuclear program and its support for anti-Israeli resistance groups. The ISA now needs President Barack Obama’s signature to turn into law.
