Early results from Romania’s parliamentary elections show the leftist Social Democrat Party (PSD) is in the lead.

With 99 percent of the votes from the Sunday balloting counted, the leftist party had about 46 percent, election authorities said Monday.

The party’s nearest rival, the center-right National Liberal Party (PNL), has come second with over 20 percent of the votes, according to the preliminary results.

The Save Romania Union, which was created back in February, is third with 9.3 percent of the votes.

The final turnout in the elections declared about 39.5 percent.

The chairman of the Social Democrats, Liviu Dragnea, hailed the results, saying he was “quite satisfied” and “overwhelmed” by what the early results showed.

“There should be no doubt who won the elections. Romanians want to feel at home in their own country and I want Romania to be a good home for all Romanians,” he said.

In April, Dragnea received a suspended two-year prison term for voter fraud in a 2012 national referendum on the impeachment of then-President Traian Basescu. He was accused of using his influence to get people to vote against Basescu. The then-president, however, remained in office after the referendum was declared invalid because of low turnout.

Romania, one of the poorest countries in the European Union (EU), is currently run by the government of Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos.
