Israel preferred Clinton as US president: Analyst

Israel would have been much happier if US Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton had won the November 8 election instead of her Republican rival, Donald Trump, says an American analyst based in Idaho.

Mark Glenn, an author and political analyst, made the remarks on Sunday, following renewed calls by Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders to reexamine the Electoral College system.

Sanders said Clinton’s defeat to Trump, despite winning the popular vote, was “weird” and begged for a review in the voting system.

Trump was able to clench a historic victory over Clinton by winning 306 electoral votes. The former secretary of state took 232 votes after losing key states.

Less than a week after the election, Sanders said the outcome necessitated a “serious discussion” on the concept of electoral votes.

The senator, who ran an unsuccessful nomination campaign against Clinton in the primaries, renewed his call in the wake of an attempt by Green Party’s nominee Jill Stein to recount votes in some states.

Glenn said Clinton and her supporters were doing the same exact things that they mocked Trump for before the election. Trump had indicated that he would not accept the result of the vote if he lost. 

“They were accusing Trump of being undemocratic, of not respecting the state’s institutions, of not respecting the constitution, of being a sore loser and all of the rest of this,” Glenn told Press TV.

“So now that the shoe is on the other foot and Clinton finds herself in the position of having lost the election via the institution of Electoral College all of the things that Trump said… are now being done by her and her supporters,” the analyst added.

Glenn noted that the bigger issue at the stake was Trump’s unpopularity within the Israeli lobby, who did not buy the New York businessman’s “sugarcoated” pledges and wanted Clinton in the office instead.

Trump’s policies towards Israel, NATO, international trade deals and other major issues had raised the alarm within America’s Jewish circles, the analyst added.

“These collectively rang huge alarm bells within the Zionist community that Trump was not going to be the average politician that organized Jewish interests are used to controlling,” he explained.

Clinton, on the other hand, had a track record of waging wars against Muslims and had appealed to the Tel Aviv regime by promising to confront Iran and Syria, Glen argued.

“It is for this reason, that even though we may not see their footprints involved in this business with the Electoral College, nevertheless, all can rest assured that Israel and the various tentacles making up its power structure in the US are hard at work,” to change the election outcome, he argued.

“The electoral college has not been created by some minor statute,” Glenn said. “This is written into the US Constitution… and yet they are so cavalierly talking about taking a political eraser to this thing and removing it,” he added.
