Three children have been killed in a mortar attack by Indian troops in Pakistan-administrated Kashmir.

Raja Arif Mehmood, a local administration official, said two girls and their brother died when mortar shells "fired by Indian troops hit their house in Kotli district along the Line of Control (LoC)."

The eldest girl was 10 years old and the youngest girl was aged five, the Pakistani official said.

Three other people, including two children, were also injured.

The Pakistani military said in a statement that its troops exchanged fire in a "befitting" response to India's "heavy" firing.

An Indian army officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to talk to reporters, blamed Pakistan for initiating the shelling.

The latest exchange of fire comes a day after Pakistan's navy claimed it had detected and stopped an Indian submarine from entering the country's territorial waters in the Arabian Sea. India denied the claim.

Kashmir has been simmering with tensions since July, when Indian forces killed a pro-independence figure, triggering mass anti-New Delhi protests.

New Delhi deployed hundreds of thousands of troops to the Muslim-majority region to clamp down on the protests.

India blames Pakistan for fanning the unrest in the region. Islamabad, however, says it is not behind the dire situation in Kashmir.

In 2003, India and Pakistan agreed to resolve their dispute via negotiation. The peace talks, however, were suspended in 2008 following terrorist attacks in Mumbai.
