Iran diving team ranks third in Asian championships

The national Iranian men’s diving team has exceeded expectations in the 10th edition of the Asian Swimming Championships in Japan, and claimed the third spot in the continental tournament.

The Iranian squad, comprised of Shahnam Nazarpour and Mojtaba Valipour, took part in the men’s synchronized 10-meter platform event at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium indoor pool on Saturday, and finished third in overall standing to pick up the bronze, the Islamic Republic of Iran Amateur Swimming Federation’s website reported.

China finished the champion, while the hosts were named runners-up and awarded the silver medal.

Iran water polo team fails to get past Japan

Meanwhile, the Iranian men’s national water polo team sustained a heavy defeat at the hands of the Japanese side on Friday, and lost to the hosts 6-15.

The Persians had subdued their Saudi opponents 15-6 the previous day to book a place in the semifinal round of the 10th edition of Asian Swimming Championships in Japan.

The Iranian water polo team consists of Omid Lotfpour, Mahdi Yazdankhah, Amin Ghavidel, Arshia Almasi, Ali Pirouzkhah, Soheil Rostamian, Amir Hossein Kayhani, Hamed Malekkhanbanan, Mohammad Javad Abbasi, Amir Dehdari, Payman Assadi, Amir Hossein Rahbar and Shayan Ghasemi-Darian. The outfit is under the tutelage of Serbian head coach Aleksandar Ćirić.

The 10th edition of the Asian Swimming Championships opened in Tokyo, Japan, on November 14, and will come to a close on November 20, 2016.
