Iran water polo team thrashes Hong Kong in Asian championship

The national Iranian men’s water polo team has pulled off a sweeping victory at the preliminary round of the 10th edition of the Asian Swimming Championships in Japan, pummeling the Hong Kong side by nearly-a-dozen-point advantage.

The Iranian aquatic sportsmen, who went down to the powerful Kazakh team 4-14 in their previous game, trounced their Hong Kong counterparts 19-8 in a Group A fixture staged at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium indoor pool on Wednesday.

The Iranian men’s national water polo team subsequently progressed to the next level of the tournament as the second top finisher of its group, and is set to meet the third-placed team in Group B.

The 10th edition of the Asian Swimming Championships opened in Tokyo, Japan, on November 14, and will come to a close on November 20, 2016.

The Islamic Republic of Iran was pitted against Hong Kong, Kazakhstan and Singapore in Group A.

Group B consisted of China, the hosts Japan, the Philippines and Saudi Arabia.

The Iranian team consists of Omid Lotfpour, Mahdi Yazdankhah, Amin Ghavidel, Arshia Almasi, Ali Pirouzkhah, Soheil Rostamian, Amir Hossein Kayhani, Hamed Malek Khanbanan, Mohammad Javad Abbasi, Amir Dehdari, Payman Assadi, Amir Hosserin Rahbar and Shayan Qassemi-Darian. The outfit is under the tutelage of Serbian head coach Aleksandar Ćirić.
