UK, EU can do business with Trump: British foreign secretary
British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has said the United Kingdom and the European Union can do business with US President-elect Donald Trump, after refusing to attend an EU special meeting on Trump.
"Donald Trump, as I've said before, is a dealmaker and I think that could be a good thing for Britain but it can also be a good thing for Europe," Johnson said on Monday as he arrived for an EU foreign ministers meeting in Brussels, the de facto capital of Europe.
"I think we all need to wait and see what they come up with, but I think we should regard it as a moment of opportunity," he added.
Trump’s campaign had been hit with many controversies since its inception in the early 2015. But he still stunned the world by defeating the heavily favored Democratic candidate, Hillary Clinton, in the November 8 election.
The British foreign secretary snubbed special talks on Trump’s election victory the night before in Brussels, saying it would send a wrong signal to the US president-elect. EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini had called the meeting.
Mogherini said after Sunday's talks the EU would like to have a "very strong partnership" with the Trump administration.
"For the moment it's not a wait-and-see attitude we can afford having because the world goes on, Europe goes on, crisis goes on, but also opportunities we can take go on," she said.
Several heads of state and other high-ranking officials, had publicly denounced Trump -- some even used abusive language against him -- in the run-up to the US presidential election.
Some world figures even expressed concerns over Trump after he was elected the president of the United States.
EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said on Friday that Trump's election risked upsetting EU relationships with the United States “fundamentally and structurally."
"We will need to teach the president-elect what Europe is and how it works,” adding that two years would be wasted while Trump "tours a world he doesn't know.”
