The US military chief says four American citizens, including two soldiers, were killed in a giant explosion inside the largest US military base in Afghanistan by an “apparent suicide bomber.”

The Taliban terrorist group claimed responsibility Saturday for the deadly attack inside the heavily fortified Bagram Airfield, located north of the capital Kabul.

Two servicemembers and two contractors were killed at the largest US military base in Afghanistan, US Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter confirmed Saturday.

The military chief extended his "sincere condolences" to the families of the soldiers, adding he was "deeply saddened" by the news.

He further warned the attackers that the US "message is simple. We will not be deterred in our mission to protect our homeland and help Afghanistan secure its own future."

Two years after US-led NATO forces formally ended their combat operations in the war-ravaged country, the US maintains around 10,000 troops in Afghanistan, most of whom are stationed in Bagram.

Meanwhile, insecurity continues in the country as militants get engaged in bombing and gun attacks.

At least six people died late on Thursday after a Taliban element rammed his explosives-laden car into the wall of the German consulate in the provincial capital city of Mazar-i-Sharif, located some 400 kilometers northwest of the capital Kabul.
