A dozen elephants and 200 mahouts have participated in a mourning ceremony to pay tribute to the late Thai king.

The tusks and their caretakers marched down the streets of Thailand’s old capital as part of a royal ceremony to mourn King Bhumibol Adulyadej who died in October.

The specially chosen white elephants including two painted ones arrived at Bangkok’s Grand palace where the king’s body is kept before cremation. The ceremony concluded with the animals kneeling down to join tens of thousands of onlookers in the observation of a minute of silence.

The Thai government has declared official mourning for a year following the death of the king.
