Ryan calls for a ‘unified’ GOP government led by Trump

Representative Paul Ryan of Wisconsin (L) and Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.

The Speaker of the US House of Representatives Paul Ryan has called on all Republicans to unite behind GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump, signaling the end of a bitter row with the party’s presidential nominee.

Ryan wrote in a CNN article on Saturday that Americans had to choose Trump over his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton if they were fed up with “the current path of decline” and wanted a “better way that offers more freedom.”

Ryan, the most senior elected Republican in the country, said the party’s current lineup of congressional candidates allows for a “unified Republican government” which would fight issues like poverty and border security under Trump’s leadership.

“If Republicans do not turn out -- if we sit this one out -- we will open the door not just to Hillary Clinton but also a Democratic Congress eager to give her a blank check,” he warned.

The Wisconsin representative spared no effort to berate the Clinton family, accusing them of “using the system to enrich themselves.”

He also condemned the former secretary of state for her email fiasco and her labeling of Trump supporters as “a basket of deplorables.”

Ryan had distanced himself from Trump, following the October release of a 2005 lewd tape that showed the New York businessman use obscene language against women.

Back then, Ryan said he would vote for Trump but would never join him at an event again.

Trump attacked Ryan in response, calling the House speaker “very weak and ineffective.”

Open to campaigning

Retracting his earlier announcement, Ryan said he was open to campaigning with Trump and his running mate Indiana Governor Mike Pence, raising the possibility of a joint event in his hometown.

He made the remarks after Trump scrapped an event in Wisconsin for what his campaign described as a scheduling conflict.

“We don’t know if it’s scheduled firm or not yet, but I intend to do it if he’s here,” Ryan told reporters. “Here’s the point: we’re going from here to Mukwonago to go campaign with Mike Pence. So everybody’s schedule is a little bit in flux in these closing moments, but if our nominee comes, we’ll campaign with him.”

Ryan voted for Trump and Pence earlier this week.
