British Andy Murray is one win away from becoming world No 1 after beating Tomas Berdych in straight sets at the quarterfinals of the Paris Masters on Friday.

Murray came face to face with Berdych knowing he stood just one more win away from being crowned world No 1 for the first time in his career, after current rankings leader Novak Djokovic suffered an unexpected defeat to Marin Cilic.

Murray saved seven points in an extraordinary first set tie-break before eventually going on to overcome the Czech 11-9 to clinch the opener. Murray immediately broke Berdych's serve in the second set, and looked set to force home his advantage until Berdych broke back.

However, Berdych failed to take advantage and his double fault handed the initiative back to Murray, who held his nerve for a sixth successive win over the 31-year-old, to book his place in the semifinals.
