Thousands have gathered in the South Korean capital, Seoul for a rather peculiar festival. They are preparing the traditional Korean dish, Kimchi for the poor.

About 50 tons of Kimchi will be made during the 3-day event. Organizers say the festival aims to offer people and tourists a better understanding of the importance of the tradition, called Gim-Jing in Korean.

Koreans eat about 1.5 million tons of Kimchi every year. The food is made from pickled radish, organic cabbages and chili pepper spices.

In 2013, UNESCO recognized the making and sharing of Kimchi as a world heritage asset.
