British pediatrician sexually assaulted 19 patients

Michael Salmon, a former pediatrician, stands trial for sexually assaulting 19 young patients during the 1970s and 1980s.

A court in Britain has put on trial a former children's doctor for sexually assaulting 19 young patients during the 1970s and 1980s.

Michael Salmon, consultant pediatrician, assaulted 18 girls and a boy while working at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Southeastern England's Buckinghamshire County during that period.

Salmon, 81, dismisses committing 25 counts of indecent assault against complainants as young as eight and also pleads not guilty to the rape of a 14-year-old girl.

“The complainants were either screened from their parents or Mr. Salmon persuaded their parents to wait outside the room,” Prosecutor Miranda Moore told the jury.

Moore said the alleged victims filed their complaints after Salmon was tried in 2015 for other offenses.

Salmon had already been stripped of his medical register in 1991 after being jailed over three counts of indecent assault against young female patients.

New figures in the UK show that the number of child sex abuse cases reported to police is dramatically on the rise.

In a recent report by The Guardian, the number of sexual abuse cases being reported to police in England and Wales rose 80 percent between 2012 and 2015.

The calculations indicate that the continuing increase would mean that by 2020, police across the country would be investigating 200,000 cases of child sexual abuse.
