Iranian professional basketball club Petrochimi Bandar Imam’s chances of claiming a breakthrough medal at the 25th edition of Fédération Internationale de Basketball (FIBA) Asia Champions Cup in China have faded away after they were outplayed in a semi-final loss to Xinjiang Flying Tigers of China.

The Iranian squad struggled to counter their opponent’s compelling mix of defense and scoring on Saturday, and eventually went down 86-90 (25–28, 20–25, 24–20 and 21–13) in a semifinal encounter at the Chenzhou Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium in the south central Chinese city of Chenzhou.

Former National Basketball Association (NBA) player Andray Blatche recorded a tournament-high 27 points for Xinjiang Flying Tigers, while Petro’s 20-year-old Behnam Yakhchali Dehkordi and American import James White scored 26 points each.

Petrochimi Bandar Imam will play Al-Ahli of the United Arab Emirates in the third-place game on Sunday.

The Emirati club fell to Lebanese side Al Riyadi 79–107 (25–15, 20–25, 31–22 and 31–17) in another semifinal match earlier on Saturday.

The 25th edition of the FIBA Asia Champions Cup started in Chenzhou, China, on October 8 and will conclude on October 16.

The FIBA Asia Champions Cup, previously known as the Asian Basketball Confederation (ABC) Champions Cup until 2002, is the Asian club championship for professional basketball. It is organized by FIBA Asia, and takes place once a year.
