Daesh booby-trapped drone kills Kurdish fighters, injures French troops
A booby-trapped drone operated by the Takfiri Daesh terrorists has killed two Kurdish fighters and injured two members of the French special forces in Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdistan region.
An unnamed French source on Wednesday confirmed that two soldiers had been hurt in the incident, which took place in early October in Erbil in northern Iraq.
According to French media reports, both soldiers have been flown back to France for treatment. One of the soldiers suffers from life-threatening injuries.
France's Le Monde newspaper earlier reported that the soldiers were operating with Kurdish Peshmerga fighters when the drone exploded in the region.
About 500 French troops, as a part of a US-led alliance that purports to be fighting Daesh, are based in Iraq, where they advise the Peshmerga and train Iraqi elite forces in Baghdad.
Another French source also confirmed the use of a "booby-trapped drone in Iraq" by Daesh. The use by the terrorists of drones carrying explosives that are intended to blow up when they hit their target is a relatively new development.
The Iraqi army and pro-government fighters have been preparing for months to liberate the northern city of Mosul, which has been under the control of Daesh since 2014.
Iraqi soldiers and fighters from the Popular Mobilization Units are engaged in operations to win back all the militant-held regions.
