Iranian professional basketball club Petrochimi Bandar Imam has posted its third win in a row at the preliminary round of the 25th edition of Fédération Internationale de Basket-ball (FIBA) Asia Champions Cup, defeating Al Rayyan of Qatar.

On Tuesday, the Iranian sportsmen scored an 89–46 victory over the Qatari squad in a Group A match staged at the Chenzhou Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium in the south central Chinese city of Chenzhou.

Petrochimi players started the game strongly and were able to maintain the tempo. They tallied enough points to stamp their class and claim the first quarter 25–8.

The Qatari side could establish itself in the second quarter, scoring points to cut the deficit. Petro, however, was fairly determined not to bow out and clinched the quarter 19–17.

Petrochimi Bandar Imam did not ease off the throttle as the match went into the third quarter. They continued to put the opposite team under pressure, and were off to a 27–10 lead.

The Iranian club ended its final quarter play on a rather strong note, and outscored Al Rayyan by 18 points to 11.

Petrochimi cemented its spot at first place in Group A with the victory. The Iranian team will face Al Riyadi of Lebanon in its last group stage fixture tomorrow.

The 25th edition of FIBA Asia Champions Cup started in Chenzhou, China, on October 8 and will conclude on October 16, 2016.

Petrochimi Bandar Imam has been drawn in Pool A along with Lebanon’s Al Riyadi, Indian ONGC, Qatar’s Al Rayyan and Pauian Archiland of Chinese Taipei.

Pool B consists of Iraqi Al Shorta, Kazakhstan’s Barsy Atyrau, Malaysian Westports Malaysia Dragons, Al Ahli of the United Arab Emirates and China’s Xinjiang Flying Tigers.

The preliminary round of the tournament is played in a round robin format, with every team taking on its four opponents in its respective group.

The top four teams from each group will then advance to the quarter-finals.

The winners of the quarter-finals will progress to the semi-finals, while the losing teams in the quarter-finals will play 5-8 classification games.
