People have gathered in the Spanish city of Tarragona for the 26th edition of human tower competition.

The tradition goes back to 18th century. This year, teams of up to 500 people form impressive towers, known as castells, which are up to 10 tiers high.

During the festival, groups and teams compete to build the tallest and most complicated towers.

The structure of the castells differs based on their complexity. A castell will be considered totally successful if it is loaded and unloaded without falling apart.

UNESCO has declared ‘castells’ as one of the masterpieces of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity.
