China has opened its first national gene bank in the southern city of Shenzhen. The bank’s mission is to protect, study and utilize good genetic resources.

It consists of a genetic information database, a living animals and plants bank and biological sample library, as well as a gene editing platform. The center aims to collect 300 million genetic samples when all phases are complete.

The site includes a cancer database with three thousand samples, information on 50,000 genome mutations and a database on birth defects. China’s gene bank is the fourth of its kind in the world after the US, UK and Japan.
