Bee-killing Asian Hornets spotted in UK for first time

The Asian Hornet has been spotted in Britain for the first time, and work is now underway to identify, destroy and remove the dangerous insects.

Asian Hornet is not a common sight. That’s an invasive predator known to kill bees and eat their honey. Now, the species has been spotted in the UK for the first time.

The hornet was discovered in mainland Britain outside Tetbury, Gloucestershire. That is only miles away from Prince Charles’ honey hives at his Highgrove estate. Luckily the hornet had been killed.

Experts believe hornets could drive the threatened native breed to extinction. But they are determined and ready to stop the potential spread by destroying their nests.

The hornet can grow up to one inch long. It has spread across Europe since it accidentally came over to France in 2004 in a shipment of pottery from China.
