Police arrest man wanted for New York, New Jersey bombings
The man suspected in the weekend bombings in New York and New Jersey has been arrested after a shootout with police.
Police found 28-year-old Ahmad Khan Rahami outside a bar in Linden, New Jersey, Union County acting prosecutor Grace Park said Monday.
Rahami was shot by police and taken to a hospital in Newark, New Jersey, where he is undergoing surgery.
Rahami is a naturalized US citizen who was born in Afghanistan, according to the FBI. Officials believe he's been cooperating with a terrorist group that orchestrated both bombings in New York and New Jersey.
Sources said Rahami was wanted for the blasts in New York City and Seaside Park, New Jersey, as well as the pipe bombs found Sunday night in Elizabeth, New Jersey.
The most destructive incident took place Saturday night in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City, where 29 people were injured. Earlier Saturday, a garbage can exploded in Seaside Park, New Jersey.
And on Sunday night, two men discovered five devices in a trash can and informed the authorities. The FBI was attempting to disarm one of the devices with a robot when it exploded at around 12:30 am Monday.
US President Barack Obama in a televised statement Monday called on US citizens to remain vigilant and offered the federal government's full assistance in the ongoing, multiagency investigation.
The heightened alert comes as world leaders are gathering on Monday in New York City for the United Nations General Assembly.
New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said Sunday that people will see "a very substantial NYPD presence this week — bigger than ever."
