Iran to spare no help to Syria in anti-terror fight: Deputy FM

The Islamic Republic will spare no effort to help Syria in the fight against terrorism, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Jaberi Ansari says.

"Iran is determined to provide Syria all the possible facilities in its fateful fight against terrorism," Jaberi Ansari said in a meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus on Monday.

He added that "strategic and one-of-a-kind" relations between Iran and Syria go beyond the two nations’ interests and are based on common views and understanding of the threats facing all regional nations such as terrorism and extremism.

US-led raid on Syrian troops “flagrant aggression”

The Syrian president, for his part, condemned as a "flagrant American aggression" the US-led coalition's deadly airstrike on government forces in eastern Syria at the weekend.

Assad said world powers are supporting "terrorist organizations" in Syria, particularly Daesh Takfiri terrorists, SANA reported.

He added that Syria’s enemies are focusing all their energies and resources to make sure that the crisis in Syria continues.

"Every time the Syrian state makes tangible progress either on the ground or towards national reconciliation, anti-Syrian states increase their support of terrorist organizations," Assad said.

"The latest example of this is the flagrant American aggression on one of the Syrian army's positions in [the province of] Dayr al-Zawr to the benefit of Daesh," he added.

On Saturday, a US-led coalition attack in Dayr al-Zawr killed at least 85 Syrian forces and injured hundreds more.

Daesh controls large parts of Dayr al-Zawr city as well as most of the province for which it is the capital. The terrorist group chiefly relies on oil fields in the province to fund its atrocious war in Syria.  

The Syrian army has been fighting it out against Daesh for the control of a key military airbase there. Dayr al-Zawr has been effectively under a Takfiri siege since early 2015 but the terrorists have suffered major setbacks over the past few months during which the Syrian army has liberated several areas.

The Pentagon has said the attack was carried out mistakenly even though it allowed Daesh to take over some parts of the region.

On Monday, Syria declared a ceasefire in the country over, citing lack of commitment by foreign-backed militants. 

The "regime of calm" was announced on September 12 following a ceasefire brokered by the United States and Russia.

The government has accused foreign-backed militants of numerous violations of the ceasefire, the second this year.

Iran, Syria urge joint committee

Also on Monday, Jaberi Ansari met with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem, where the Iranian official called for the expansion of cooperation between the foreign miniseries of the two countries.

During the meeting the two sides discussed the political status quo and developments on the ground in Syria and highlighted the need for the establishment of a committee comprising representatives from Iranian and Syrian foreign ministries.

Muallem, for his part, urged regular and periodical meetings between Iran and Syria for the accomplishment of joint strategic objectives.
