The Iranian men’s national basketball team has conquered Japan in the second round of the 2016 Fédération Internationale de Basketball (FIBA) Asia Challenge.

The Iranians snatched a hard-fought victory on Tuesday, prevailing over the Japanese counterparts 68-57 in a Group F match staged at Azadi Basketball Hall in western Tehran.

The Iranian basketball players started the first quarter in a convincing fashion, and made diverse attacks and blocks to outscore Japan 17-13.

The second quarter played out much like the first, and the Persians tallied enough points to claim the period 20-13.

The Japanese side, however, came from behind as the match went into the third quarter, scoring points to surge ahead. They eventually got a four-point lead and won the quarter 20-16.

The Iranian players were strong-minded not to relinquish the lead. They mounted a series of attacks, and shot baskets to close the final quarter at 15-10.

Iran is scheduled to return to action on Thursday to play against South Korea.

The 2016 FIBA Asia Challenge, which marks the 6th edition of the international basketball tournament, started in the Iranian capital on September 9, and will end on September 18.
