Muslims across world celebrate Eid al-Adha

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

• Muslims across the world are celebrating Eid al-Adha or the Feast of Sacrifice, which commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s submission to divine order to sacrifice his son, Ismail. Just before executing the order, God provided the prophet with a ram to sacrifice. The ceremony begins by performing Eid prayers.
• Saudi Arabia continues to bomb Yemen. The latest airstrikes have targeted the country’s Sa’ada province as the Yemeni people are marking Eid al-Adha. At least 14 people were killed and ten wounded in the attacks. Over 9,600 people have lost their lives since Riyadh launched its assault against Yemen in March 2015.
• In Turkey, an explosion has rocked a central district in the Kurdish populated city of Van. At least 27 people have been wounded. Ambulances were rushed to the scene of the blast and police launched an investigation. No one has claimed responsibility for the bombing yet.
• An Israeli lawmaker has criticized Tel Aviv for supporting terrorists fighting in Syria against the government of President Bashar Assad. Akram Hasson said Jabhat Fateh al-Sham group formerly known as Nusra Front is operating in Syria with unprecedented logistical and medical support from Israel.
• Syria is preparing to begin the new cease-fire agreed by the US and Russia from Monday sunset. The deal clinched in Geneva on Saturday will come into force first in the northern city of Aleppo. Government forces have been making steady advances against foreign-backed militants there over the past few months.
• Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has joined worshipers for Eid al-Adha prayers at a mosque in a Damascus suburb. He was visiting the city of Daraya, southwest of Damascus. Daraya which had been occupied by militants was liberated by government forces last month. The liberation of Daraya dealt a major blow to terrorists.
• Senior Iranian cleric Seyyed Ahmad Khatami has slammed Saudi Arabia for negligence in last year’s deadly stampede in Mina during the Hajj pilgrimage. Speaking at the Eid al-Adha prayers in Tehran, Khatami said the Mina tragedy proves that Riyadh is not capable of running Islam’s holy mosques.
• South Korea says that the North has completed preparations for another nuclear test. This comes as an unnamed South Korean military source has threatened that Seoul will completely destroy Pyongyang if it starts a nuclear war. North Korea says it has mastered the ability to mount a warhead on a ballistic missile.
