Heavy rain has triggered flooding in southern and northern Greece, leaving four people dead and one unaccounted for, authorities say.

Two women, aged 80 and 63, were found dead as floods submerged their basement homes in Kalamata city and its suburbs in the southern region of Peloponnese during the early hours of Wednesday, according to the fire service.

The floods also killed a 90-year-old man in the Kalamata area, while to the east of Kalamata, a 73-year-old man was found dead in the vicinity of Sparta.

Hundreds of homes and businesses have also been submerged in other parts of Peloponnese.

A woman in her sixties remains missing in northern Greece since early Wednesday morning. She last called her husband to tell him she was leaving her flooded car near Michaniona of Thermaikos municipality, south of Thessaloniki city.

Mayor Yiannis Mavromatis has called for a state of emergency in Thermaikos municipality, where the rainfall washed parked cars into the sea and left roads damaged.

"Some parts present an image of total destruction, while elsewhere there is partial destruction," Mavromatis said.
