US says talks with Russia on Syria still progressing
The United States says talks with Russia aimed at tackling the Syrian issue are still progressing despite lack of any conclusion referred to earlier by the two world powers’ officials.
US State Department spokesman Mark Toner made the announcement on Tuesday, Reuters reported, following a lack of any conclusion in continual meetings between high-ranking officials to effect a cessation of hostilities in the war-ravaged country.
Toner’s remarks were apparently aimed at renewing glimmers of hope in the fate of the negotiations to ultimately effect peace in the Muslim Arab country.
The spokesman initially said Washington aims at an ideal agreement with Moscow but he later explained the US is in need a clear path forward to end hostilities in Syria.
US President Barack Obama spoke of "gaps of trust" after a meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin earlier.
The Monday meeting, which included US Secretary of State John Kerry and US National Security Adviser Susan Rice, apparently lasted longer than planned while most of it focused on Syria.
After the talk, held on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Hangzhou, China, Obama touched upon "grave differences with the Russians in terms of both the parties we support but also the process that is required to bring about peace in Syria."
The two states have remained at odds over several issues, yet remaining unresolved despite myriad rounds of talks on Syria, gripped by foreign-backed militancy since March 2011.
According to an anonymous US official quoted by CNN, if the country “cannot get the type of agreement we want, we will walk away from that effort."
