Iran lands 4th in Junior World Wrestling Championships
Iran's junior freestyle wrestling team has managed to collect four medals, including two precious gold ones, at the 2016 Junior World Wrestling Championships in France and claimed the fourth spot at the conclusion of the international sporting event.
On Sunday, Amir Reza Mohammad Ja’far Amiri overcame Frédérick Choquette of Canada 12-2 by technical fall in his opening round match of the 120-kilogram weight category in the east-central French city of Macon, but fell to his Russian opponent Kazbek Khubulov 6-8 later on.
Alireza Nejati later overcame Germany’s Marcel Boehme 6-0 and Abhijeet Chandrakant Katake of India 4-0 in repechage bouts to qualify for the third-place showdown.
He won the contest against Polish athlete Kamil Tomasz Kosciolek 7-2 to take home the bronze medal.
In the 60-kilogram division, Payman Bioukagha Biabani collected a gold medal for Iran after defeating Turkish wrestler Selim Kozan 3-1.
Hossein Lotfali Shahbazigazvar also secured Iran's second gold medal at the sports tournament with 7-1 victory over Erik Sven Thiele of Germany in the 96-kilogram final encounter.
Moreover, Ahmad Yousef Bazrighaleh was downed 10-0 by technical fall to American rival Mark John Hall II in the final bout of 74-kilogram weight class, and earned a silver medal for the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The Russian team amassed 66 points and was named the top-ranked squad. Azeris landed in second place with 49 points, and third-place Turks bagged 43 points. Iranians could notch up 37 points.
The 2016 Junior World Wrestling Championships started in French city of Macon on August 30, and ran until September 4.
Dozens of wrestlers from various countries, including Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Canada, Colombia, Egypt, France, Georgia, Hungary, India, Iran, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Poland, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine, the United States and Uzbekistan took part in the tournament.
