France’s Le Pen vows ‘Frexit’ if elected president
French National Front Party Leader Marine Le Pen has vowed to hold a referendum on France remaining in the EU if she becomes president in the 2017 elections.
"This referendum on France belonging to the European Union, I will do it. Yes it is possible to change things. Look at the Brits, they chose their destiny, they chose independence ... We can again be a free, proud and independent people," she said on Saturday speech given in France’s northeastern town of Brachay.
Around 700 supporters had gathered for her speech, chanting “Marine, President" and waving French flags.
On June 23, nearly 52 percent of Britons voted in a referendum to end their country’s 42-year membership in the EU.
After Brexit’s announcement, Le Pen tweeted her congratulations to the people of England. “Victory to liberty! As I have been demanding for many years, we now need the same referendum in France and EU countries,” she said.
While portraying herself as France’s sole plausible defender of law and order and national unity, Le Pen told her supporters that the most suitable way to battle terrorism was ballot paper.
France has been hit by a spate of terrorist attacks, and has been in state of emergency since last November when 130 people were killed in a series of coordinate attacks across the capital Pairs.
The people of France are set to cast the votes for the country’s new president between April and May next year.
Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy has also announced that he will be running in the upcoming elections.
