Ayatollah Khamenei pardons, commutes sentences of convicts

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has pardoned or commuted the sentences of a number of Iranian convicts.

Ayatollah Khamenei on Saturday agreed to pardon or reduce the sentences of 705 inmates eligible to be granted clemency.

The Leader’s decision came in response to a letter from Iran's Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani urging clemency for eligible convicts on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Imam Reza (PBUH), the eighth Shia Imam and the grandson of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH).

The Leader granted clemency to the convicts based on the authority given to him by Article 110 of the Iranian Constitution.

Article 110 of Iran’s constitution grants the Leader the right to pardon or reduce the sentences of convicts, within the framework of Islamic criteria, upon a recommendation from the Judiciary chief.
