UN warns about growing South Sudanese refugee population

  • At least 13 people have been killed and dozens more injured in Saudi Arabia’s latest airstrikes in Yemen. Saudi warplanes targeted a school in Sa’ada province, killing 7 children. 6 civilian also died as a house in the same province was hit.
     
  • In Indian-ruled Kashmir, hundreds of people have taken to the streets to protest against the raging violence in the region by security forces . They demanded an immediate end to what they call India’s occupation of their territory. The protesters also denounced the international community for turning a blind eye to the situation.
     
  • A Venezuelan court has upheld a 14-year prison sentence handed down to opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez. 45 year old Lopez was arrested amid a wave of protests that swept the Latin American nation and left 43 people dead in 2014. He was at the forefront of demonstrations demanding President Nicolas Maduro's resignation.
     
  • The United Nations has warned about the refugee crisis in South Sudan. It says the scale of the influx out of the country is straining the capacity of neighboring countries. According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, the South Sudanese refugee population in the region has grown to 930-thousand and is still rising.
     
  • Iraqi army has made fresh gains in the northern city of Mosul. Iraqi troops have retaken 3 villages in the south of Mosul held by Daesh terrorist group. According to military officials, scores of terrorists have been killed and 7 car bombs destroyed during operations.
     
  • The European Union has pledged support for Ukraine amid escalating tensions between Kiev and Moscow. EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini says the bloc is quote unwavering in its support for Ukraine's territorial integrity and sovereignty. She has urged Kiev and Moscow to avoid any action which could fuel tensions.
     
  • Britain’s food bank charities have condemned a food poverty scandal across the world's fifth largest economy. The Trussel Trust also warned about the health problems resulting from food poverty. They blame the government’s lack of comprehensive plans for the deteriorating crisis in Britain.
     
  • Iranian weightlifter Kianoush Rostami has broken his own world record winning the men's 85 kg overall results at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics. Rostami has clinched Iran's first medal of the Games.
