Iranian professional boxer Ehsan Rouzbahani has experienced a bitter defeat at the boxing tournaments of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and subsequently dumped out of the high-status international multi-sport event.

On Sunday evening, 28-year-old Rouzhabani lost his men’s light heavy 81-kilogram Round of 32 bout against Peter Mullenberg of the Netherlands 3-0.

The Dutch boxer made swift and fluid movements throughout the first round, and could resist Rouzbahani’s attacks to narrowly take it by 29 points to 28.

The Iranian fighter sharply intensified his spell of pressure on Mullenberg as the competition progressed ands extended into the second round. The 28-year-old Dane eventually managed to get away and repeat the first round’s result.

Rouzbahani faded in the closing stages of the decisive third round, and Mullenberg prevailed 29-28 to break his Iranian opponent and pull off a victory.

“I cannot understand why I was declared the loser. All would admit that I delivered a better performance than the Dutch representative.

“I have overcome opponents much stronger than Mullenberg. Judges sealed my today’s defeat. Even though my rival committed fouls on a number of occasions, he had his hand raised in victory as the winner,” Rouzbahani said with tears running down his cheeks.

Iran’s Deputies for Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs Nasrollah Sajjadi and Manaf Hashemi besides President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Shooting Federation Mohammad Ali Shiojaei embraced Rouzabani in turns and tried to calm him down.
