Pakistan deports relentless US spy for second time

Pakistan has deported a "US spy" for the second time after mistakenly granting him entry to the country.

According to Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Sunday, Matthew Barrett was detained during a joint FIA and police raid at a hotel in Islamabad a few hours after unknowing officials at a nearby airport gave him an entry visa.

Barrett was initially charged with espionage in 2011 for “concealing with intent to facilitate design to wage war,” after being apprehended with maps and photographs in a high security zone that prohibited the entry of civilians.

He was then deported and barred from re-entering the country.

At the time, Barrett claimed he had been living in Islamabad, with an expired visa, for the last three years along with his Pakistani wife and two children.

Pakistani Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has ordered an investigation into the issue. So far several immigration officers have been fired or arrested and the assistant director of the FIA has been suspended from duty.

A spokesperson for the US embassy in Islamabad refrained from commenting on the issue, stating restrictions arising from the privacy act.
