Canada has charged a senior UK army officer with sexually assaulting a Canadian servicewoman in Ontario, ordering him not the leave the North American state.

Police in Ontario said Saturday that Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Davies, 45, had been arrested in April after attacking the 52-year-old Canadian female military officer, British media reported.

According to a legal order, Davies, a veteran of the 2003 US-led invasion of Afghanistan, has been bailed to appear in court on 15 September.

The UK soldier, who was in Canada on a temporary posting, has been ordered to surrender his passport and stay in Canada ahead of the court appearance.

Davies commanded Britain’s 3rd Battalion the Mercian Regiment during his military tour of Afghanistan in 2014.

Ontario police said Davies met the Canadian officer the evening before the alleged sexual assault during a commemoration ceremony in early April for the Battle of Vimy Ridge, when Canadian troops fought German soldiers in France during World War I.

The alleged victim reported the assault to Ontario police, prompting local detectives to launch a criminal probe.

The British commander was taken into custody for one count of sexual assault on August 2 after attending Kingston police headquarters, according to the report.

“Kingston police detectives have formed reasonable grounds to believe the woman was sexually assaulted by the British officer in her hotel room,” said a police statement.

A British army spokeswoman said the military would not comment on the case due to the ongoing legal proceedings.
